I truly believe, that how you start your day will always determine how your day pans out. Yes at any given moment, we have the power and the choice to change the direction we are headed, whether it’s a bad attitude we need to nip in the butt quick smart, a better food choice we need to make for lunch, or that gym, yoga, meditation sesh we need to fit in today to move our body. Every second of every day is your choice, but over the past couple of years, one thing, that has become clear to me is the importance of how we begin each day.
I believe there are three elements we need to take in to consideration to make sure we set ourselves up for a kick ass day, every day from the moment we get up!
Those three elements are your MIND. BODY and SOUL.
People often say, that the first thought or thoughts we have in the morning, will set your mood and mind frame for the rest of the day, and I couldn’t agree more with this! Think about a time recently, or in the past, you have woken up upset, stressed or worried about something. How did you feel for the rest of the day? Pretty crappy right?! And it can be really hard to shake that crappy feeling throughout your day.
This is why what you THINK and the words you speak to yourself as soon as you rise are SO important. Every morning when I wake up, one of the first things I do, is reflect on three things I am grateful for. I also repeat different affirmations, to cement in to my mind, the things I want to attract in my life, as well as showing gratitude for the things I already have in my life. Instantly this is a mood lifter, and will definitely set your mind up for positive thoughts for the rest of your day. Bad attitude and negative thoughts, be gone!
So I challenge you this week, to really take note of the thoughts you have as soon as you wake up in the morning, and make a conscious effort to make them positive! A little side note too: Do not hop on your phone until you have set your mind frame for the day. Scrolling through social media as soon as you get up, is one of the worst things you can do, and can be an instant mood killer (trust me, I made this mistake for too long!) With so much influence, we can find ourselves trapped in the cage of social media just by scrolling past an image on Instagram, seeing a pic of someone else, comparing ourselves to that person and then feeling crap for the rest of the day. Let’s face it how many times have you done that? Or even reading something sad, will instantly bring you down.
Even worse, if you have a partner, waking up in the morning and hoping straight on your phone, instead of embracing your partners presence and being grateful for waking up to another day next to them, is a sure way to eventually kill the relationship. So ditch your phone in the mornings, and don’t hop on until you are up, awake, and grateful with positive intentions, ready to start your day.
Moving your body first thing in the morning is not only great for your health, but it will do absolute wonders for your mental state!. It gets those happy hormones buzzing and awakens the cells in your body. Exercising in the morning has been part of my daily routine for years now, and I believe it has changed my life and health dramatically. It gives me mental clarity throughout the day, focus, a positive outlook on life, a strong, fit and healthy body and a truck load more energy.
Finding something you enjoy doing, and something your body loves doing is absolute key. This is a hard lesson I have had to learn over the past few years. For ages I would slog my body out in the gym, even on days I didn’t feel like it, because I thought going to the gym is what I ‘had’ to do. And as a result, that just made me unhappy, I had days I didn’t enjoy it, but still went, and that probably raised my cortisol even more. Yuk! I was also exercising for the wrong reasons. I thought I had to look like a fitness model 24/7 and that’s why I went to the gym. I cringe just thinking about that! Now, my intention is to move my body every day, so that I can maintain optimal health, and a strong body. That is my WHY and driving force to move my body every day.
Moving your body in the morning I believe is key to a happy and successful day, but it most definitely has to be exercise you want to do, and enjoy doing. I have learnt to really tune in to what my body wants to do each day. Some days I am called to do yoga, some days it may be an ocean walk, and some days it may be an intense weights session at the gym. The point is, I am moving my body! So the next time you get up to exercise, instead of hopping in to autopilot mode and just ‘going through the motions’ of exercise, going to the gym, and mindlessly doing what you do every single day, then leaving the gym and saying to yourself ‘Wow, I don’t even really remember what I did, I just did it’ (let me guess did you just say to yourself ‘omg, I do that!’ Yep, been there too sister) sit with yourself for a minute, tune in to your body and find out what it feels like doing today. Actually give a dam about making your body happy girlfriend! If you can do that every morning, you will be dancing through your day 😉
Lastly, you need to feed your soul every morning. For me this is through meditation, dry body brushing, saying my affirmations, and again, reflecting on three things I am grateful for (this one fills me up so much!) Filling up your soul first thing in the morning, means you are filling yourself up with love before you start your day. And for those of you that have been following me for a while now, would know I am always saying you cannot be the best version of yourself to others or serve others well, if you haven’t filled yourself up first. That is why I believe taking time each morning to do something that fills you up, is so imperative for your wellbeing.
I don’t know about you, but I am here to serve, I have a purpose, and I want to kick some serious butt while doing it. So I know the only way I can do that is to fill myself right up to the brim first.
So now I am going to ask you – What is an act of self-love you can do each morning? Something that will leave you feeling so full, you are just overflowing and have so much to give others. (Yes it literally should feel like you are overflowing with love 🙂 )
So there you have it beautiful. The THREE key elements I believe you need to focus on each morning to have a kick ass day. I know for some it can be overwhelming with so much info out there! But it really is about making it your own, taking what works for you while focusing on nurturing these three elements each morning, and the rest will follow.
